Final Images.

Hi guys.

So here are the final images i came up with.

Image 1.
Shows our idea of shark island. The fun lies below the green housing. The only evidence of what lies below are the tubes that connect the two zones.

Image 2.
Reinforces the ideas of this connection.

Image 3.
Shows the idea of the green housing. Literal green housing - so that the housing blends into its environment so much that the tubes are the only evidence of the action that lies below - reinforcing the relationships to the shark fin.

Image 4.
Shows the two separate zones or areas - one of calm the other action, adventure, entertainment, chaos and more.

Ning,

We at group 11 would just like to sum up our design concept.

By reducing the Rangsit students concept of the shark island down to the simplistic idea of what the shark represents in terms of behavioral patterns and physical characteristics, we developed a concept where the chaotic, adventurous eco-tourism is housed below the surface much the like thrashing body of the shark, where from the surface the only indication of its presences is its fin.

Our drawings have been developed to show the orientation of these two specific zones and how they are connected with tubes that penetrate the surface. These tubes were suggested by the Rangsit students and we felt it could be a great aspect of the design to exaggerate in order to engage them as visual reminders of the adventure the lurks below the surface. The idea of the balloons allows the tubes to be put in context when they penetrate above the surface into the residential zone as they indicate a visual link and also a physical passage way to below.

Also please note that a number of our post have been commented on by various group members rather than written as new posts, so they might be over looked unless you were made aware.

Cheers, Group 11 (Katrina the Courageous Outrageous, Jess the Mighty, Kate the Chief, Matt the Mate).
hey guys,

Jess those pictures were great, I think Katrina hit the nail on the head with taking the details of the tubes a little further.

I think that the direction we are taking really cements the concept of the shark where adventure is contained under ground and the peaceful living above. Also the balloon idea is a quirky way of allowing the users to glimpse at what is below the surface, much like a shark and it's fin. It gives the tubes an identity and therefor a purpose, it puts them in context rather than being just random tubes penetrating the calm residential area.

Kate
hey,
The contrast of the different spaces in your images is nice. There probably needs to be greater emphasis on the transport tubes. In our final images a closer view of theses elements may be appropriate. Maybe an image of a single tube protruding through a house is a good way to convey our concept. It would also be important to include some visual indicator emerging from the tube. This could include a dramatic lighting effect or an escaped item from the fun below, e.g. balloons.
Katrina
Hello team,

Just a few more idea's from what Katrina has done and what we spoke about.

Great, well lets say 10am on Thursday over at the studio? No point getting up to early after a submission day ;).

See you guys then,

Matt
Hey,

Yea I'm free any time thursday also. Ill put some images together of how we might present it, just for some ideas to discuss.

Jess
Hey all,
I am free during the day Thursday, around 4 it might get tricky but anytime before than I can meet up!
Kate
Hey,
Anytime Thursday suits me. What constraints does the rest of the group have?

Hey guys,

I love your diagrams, I know you've only done them for visual effect but I think they are pretty well close to what we are after. Giving the residential area a more rigid arrangement as opposed to the more sporadic eco-tourism underbelly gives and even clear definition between the spaces, now both physically and symbolically. I really think this is the same path that the Rangsit students were beginning to go down.

And I'm also digging the green buildings, its taking eco very literally but doesn't make it look cheesy.

What do you guys think about getting together quickly on Thursday just to sum up the assignment before submission? Lets us know if a better time suits.

Cheers Matt.

.... and a plan view

Yeah, i like the idea of the green housing, I think it brings our design more in line with the concept the Rangsit students were trying to achieve. I have started to use Archicad to communicate our ideas visually. I have not yet implemented any of the transport tubes but instead looked at the organisation of the spaces the tubes will eventually connect. The red round masses are representative of the entertainment spaces. I have clustered them haphazardly in an attempt to make the interaction with these spaces more adventurous. What forms do you think they should take? The green housing above ground in contrast has been placed to a grid with the intention of the buildings been less challenging to those who use them.

Green Housing

Hi,

Just posting a new idea. The concept for the island is eco/green tourism. Why not make the housing green - literally make it green covering it with plants so much so that is is hardly noticeable. From this greenery we may then get glimpses of the action below. Like the shark fin protruding from the water - we get a glimpse but not the whole story.

May be a silly idea -  feel free to be a harsh critic!

Jess

Hello,

Yea I like the idea of the tubes making an appearance above the ground at the housing - like the shark fin the tubes will just reveal a little of what lies below. How then can we tie the tubes into the housing? What type of housing best contrasts what goes on below?
Do the tubes go through the house? Or do you exit he house to get to the 'excitement below'? Also do we bring more than just the tubes form the entertainment zone to the surface, how discrete is what goes on below. I actually think just the tubes is enough, create a sense of mystery - distinguish entertainment from residence.

The Tubes that go down into the entertainment areas from the residential buildings are split into 4, and are connected. I think each of the them should be dedicated to a type of entertainment. Eg, one could be for shopping (grocery and everything else), one could be for entertainment like cinemas, theatre and concerts, Another for hobbies and recreation (Eg. bowling, skating, tennis, squash, swimming pools ect.) and lastly of course one for dining, (Eg. bars, clubs, restaurants, cafes Etc.).

There is also one tube on its own not connected to a building. This one could be a CBD, so having important things like, doctors, dentists, hairdressers, hospitals, accountants, architects, and all other businesses. And I think it should also be joined to the other underground areas, What do you think?

What other ideas do you have?

Kate
Hey,

We think that the Rangsit student's concept of the shark is interesting. It gives meaning to the shape of the island, as is the case of a sharks body the majority of the action is under water, with only the fin being visible. This is then reflected in the calmer residential areas being above ground, as in seeking refuge from the chaos of the shark under the water line, while the "Extreme play and adventure" areas (as they put it) are under ground.

One idea that Katrina has suggested, is that the glass tubes that offer access to below ground could perhaps be extruded past the above ground level, again like the sharks fin to indicate the presence of the action below. The tubes could be seen poking through the residential "calmness" to allow small glimpses of the touristy "action" aspect below.

Matt & Katrina.
I agree the site should be left as is. I think we should explore the concept of the shark further in the design of the above and below surface structures. It is difficult to interpret the deeper concept of the Rangsit student's work (most is written in their language). What is your interpretation of their reasoning and motivation of shark island?
Katrina
Hey hey,

I think we might leave the contours of the island as is, that leaves us more time to concentrate on the actual arrangements and relationships between the tourisms areas below and the residential areas above.

So I think we are in agreement then that Option B is the go, so we'll work towards further clarity of the two areas.

Cheers, Matt
I agree with looking at option B as well. Both the housing and entertainment buildings haven't been developed much as yet so that gives us an opportunity to design them to work for us. Also what do you all think of the actual island? Are we going to leave the shark fin so curled over?
Kate

Conceptual Ideas

Hey all.

Option b might be interesting to investigate. I think the contrast of the housing to the entertainment area below could make for an intriguing design Whilst the housing needs to be different to the spaces below ( one usually expects greater privacy in their place of residence) there needs to be a common idea or concept that is embedded and connects both. The glass tubes connect both physically, but is there a way that this transportation method influences the design of both spaces?

Conceptual ideas.

Hi everyone.
Just posting a few ideas as t where we might go with shark island.
We could
a) Focus on the transport on the island, the way people navigate their way around in the glass tubes.
b) or my other thought was to thing of the way the housing the sits above the entertainment area below. As below is a place of action and fun, does the housing above mimic this - or is it the complete opposite. Post your thoughts and lets get hark island rolling!
